If You Don't Use It You Will Lose It! Dental Insurance

Dental Insurance, best brampton dentist, Kids Dentist Brampton, Caledon Dentist, Bolton Dentist, Top Dentist in Brampton,

Have you been putting off your dental treatment?

The end of the year is fast approaching and due to our busy lives, many of us have been putting off our dental  cleanings, fillings, crownsbridges, or even getting that impression done for a night guard. Each year we receive an individual dollar amount maximum from our insurance company. If this amount is not used, by the end of the year, it does not roll over to the next and is unfortunately lost. Be sure to check with your dental office to find out if you have any outstanding dental work so that you can get the best out of your dental coverage.

Remember: If you don't use it, you will lose it!

Know about dental fluorosis and what causes it - Brampton Dentist

Dental fluorosis is caused by excessive amounts of high concentration fluoride exposure during tooth development. It often appears as faint white streaks on enamel in most mild cases and in the most severe cases will appear as a brown mottled spots on the teeth. Usually it is a combination of fluoride sources which lead to the over exposure.  Children between the ages of 1 – 4 are at critical age of exposure. A child is no longer at risk after the age of 8 because all of the teeth have been developed already.

Since fluorosis is permanent and will not go away over time there are some ways to reduce its appearance. Most cases of fluorosis are mild and cannot be seen easily, but for more severe cases there are options such as bonding resin on fronts of teeth affected or veneers. Unfortunately, teeth whitening will often make the stains and white streaks have an almost chalky appearance which will still stand out from the regular tooth colour. The best way to find a solution which will work best for your specific case is to meet with a dental professional.

Recreational drugs and the effects on your teeth!

Did you know that there are consequences for your oral health when you decide to use recreational drugs? It’s true! Here are some examples:
  • Tooth loss: Using tobacco, ecstasy, amphetamines and methamphetamines, can lead to the constriction of the capillaries in your gums. This affects the attachment of the bone to the tissue of your teeth and may lead to tooth loss.
  • Dry mouth: Marijuana, ecstasy, amphetamines, methamphetamines, heroin and replacement therapies may decrease the saliva production that occurs in your mouth. This will in turn, increase your risk for gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Erosion and tooth decay: Ecstasy raises your body temperature and you will want to consume sugary liquids. Marijuana and heroin also cause sugar cravings. Frequent consumption of sugary drinks and sweets will weaken your tooth enamel. Vomiting after alcohol consumption may also erode your teeth.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Extracted? Brampton Dentists

Dentist near me, Tooth Pain, Brampton Dentists, Dental Offices in Brampton, Wisdom tooth extractions specialists,
Wisdom teeth, also referred to as third molars, get their name by being the last teeth to come in during young adulthood. As part of a dental visit, your dentist will examine you to determine if your wisdom teeth are healthy and properly positioned.

Every patient is unique, but in general, wisdom teeth may need to be removed when there is evidence of changes in the mouth such as:
  • pain
  • infection
  • cysts
  • tumors
  • damage to adjacent teeth
  • gum disease
  • tooth decay (if it is not possible or desirable to restore the tooth)
Your dentist or specialist may also recommend removal to prevent problems or for others reasons, such as when removal is part of an orthodontic, restorative or periodontal treatment plan.

In addition, the condition of your mouth changes over time. Wisdom teeth that are not removed should continue to be monitored, because the potential for developing problems later on still exists. As with many other health conditions, as people age, they are at greater risk for health problems and that includes potential problems with their wisdom teeth. Regular dental visits are important so your dentist can evaluate not just your wisdom teeth but your overall oral health to help you prevent and manage dental disease and achieve optimal oral health. ADA

Food for Thought ... and Healthier Teeth!!!!

A balanced, nutritious diet is good for your general health as well as your dental health. Without the right nutrients, your teeth and gums can become more susceptible to decay and gum disease. Sugar is one of the main causes of dental problems. The average Canadian eats the equivalent of 40 kg (88 lb) of sugar each year. Here are a few ways to reduce your sugar intake, and help your teeth at the same time.

• Try to choose sugar-free snacks such as milk, fruit, vegetables, nuts, plain yogurt, sunflower or pumpkin seeds, cheese, melba toast, juice and salads.
• Add less sugar to your coffee or tea or try sugar substitutes. Try to avoid sugar-sweetened soft drinks and look for fruit juices and drinks with no added sugar.
• Pay attention to the list of ingredients when you are grocery shopping. Honey, molasses, liquid invert sugar, glucose, and fructose are all types of sugar.
• When you do eat sweets, there are things you can do to avoid harming your teeth: avoid sticky sweets that cling to your teeth and are harder to brush away; eat sweets with a meal, not as a snack, to improve the flow of saliva, which helps wash away and dilute sugar; and carry a travel-size toothbrush and use it after eating sweets.
• If you can’t brush, at least rinse your mouth with water or eat a fibrous fruit such as an apple or raw vegetables. Or chew a piece of sugarless gum. Trident gum, which is the first chewing gum to be recognized by the Canadian Dental Association, contains DentecTM(Xylitol). Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener that is found in plants, in fruits, such as raisins and strawberries and in vegetables such as lettuce, onions and carrots.

Thumbsucking and Pacifier Use

Thumbsucking, Pacifier Use, Brampton Dental Offices,
Thumbsucking is a natural reflex for children. Sucking on thumbs, fingers, pacifiers or other objects may make babies feel secure and happy and help them learn about their world.
Young children may also suck to soothe themselves and help them fall asleep.

How Can Thumbsucking Affect My Child's Teeth?

After permanent teeth come in, sucking may cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and alignment of the teeth. It can also cause changes in the roof of the mouth.
Pacifiers can affect the teeth essentially the same ways as sucking fingers and thumbs, but it is often an easier habit to break.
The intensity of the sucking is a factor that determines whether or not dental problems may result. If children rest their thumbs passively in their mouths, they are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs. Some aggressive thumbsuckers may develop problems with their baby (primary) teeth.

When Do Children Stop Sucking Their Thumbs?

Children usually stop sucking between the ages of two and four years old, or by the time the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. If you notice changes in your child’s primary teeth, or are concerned about your child’s thumbsucking consult your dentist.

How Can I Help My Child Stop Thumbsucking?

  • Praise your child for not sucking.
  • Children often suck their thumbs when feeling insecure or needing comfort. Focus on correcting the cause of the anxiety and provide comfort to your child.
  • For an older child, involve him or her in choosing the method of stopping.
  • Your dentist can offer encouragement to your child and explain what could happen to their teeth if they do not stop sucking.
If these tips don’t work, remind the child of their habit by bandaging the thumb or putting a sock on the hand at night. Your dentist or pediatrician may prescribe a bitter medication to coat the thumb or the use of a mouth appliance.

The scary truth about drugs and the effects on your oral health. - Brampton Dentists

Article by: Mira Budd
Are you using tobacco, ecstasy, marijuana, heroine, amphetamines, methamphetamines drugs, alcohol and replacement therapies? Below is a list of the drugs and their effect on your teeth and oral health.
Tobacco, Ecstasy, Amphetamines and Methamphetamines: These drugs can cause constriction of the capillaries in your gums affecting the attachment of the bone to the tissue of the teeth which may lead to tooth loss.
Marijuana, Ecstasy, Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, Heroin and Replacement Therapies: These drugs may decrease the production of saliva in your mouth causing dry mouth which will increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
Ecstasy, Marijuana and Heroin: These drugs cause sugar cravings. Consumption of sweets and sugary drinks weaken the tooth enamel.
Alcohol: When drinking alcohol your mouth is exposed to increased levels of sugars and acids. This can be damaging to your teeth. Also vomiting after having alcohol may lead to tooth erosion. It is also important to know that according to the Canadian Cancer Society, the risk of developing oral cancer increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Drinking alcohol is the second major risk factor for developing oral cancer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DENTAL X-RAYS - Dentists Brampton

Along with a dental examination dental x-rays are an important part of your dental health. Dental x-rays help your dentist diagnose cavities (that can not be seen by a visual examination), cracks in the tooth, diseases in the bone, periodontal or gum disease, infections underneath the gum, bone loss, abscesses, cysts or tumors.

X-rays can help diagnose problems early, when they are easily treatable and cost a lot less money. It is better to have a small filling done then to let it go until you are in pain. If there is pain or infection this means you have let the problem get too far and may need a lot of treatment which also increases time of treatment and cost.

On an individual basis, your dentist decides how often to take x-rays depending on the health of the oral cavity. If you are prone to cavities or have a lot of bone loss the dentist might suggest more frequent x-rays, then someone who has no bone loss and not prone to decay.

At our office we take digital x-rays. For more information on this or other topics, be sure to contact one of our dental professionals.

Common Mistakes Parents Make With Their Children's Dental Care - Brampton Dentists

Childs' First dental visit, Dental Info, Dental Facts, Top Dentist in Brampton, Brampton Dental offices, Dentists in Brampton, Dental Caries, BRINGING CHILDREN TO THEIR FIRST DENTAL VISIT TOO LATE
A child's first dental visit should be when the first tooth appears or by the age of 1, whichever comes first. It is the best practice to start a child on a good path and reduce early childhood caries. For more information click here.
ALLOWING CHILDREN TO BRUSH AND FLOSS THEIR TEETH ON THEIR OWN
It is very important to teach and help your child brush and floss their teeth to aid them in the right direction in maintaining proper care of their teeth at an early age. Being with them when they are brushing a parent can ensure that they do not rush their brush and brush for at least 2 minutes, covering all the teeth and surfaces.
THINKING THAT CAVITIES ON BABY TEETH DO NOT NEED TO BE FIXED
Some baby teeth will be in your child’s mouth until age 12 and the decayed tooth that needs to be fixed may be one of those. Decayed, broken or teeth that are infected can hurt your child’s oral and overall health and it may also affect the way your child feels about him or herself now and in the future. For more information click here.
ALLOWING CHILDREN TO DRINK SPORT DRINKS
The sugar and acid in energy drinks is a perfect recipe for bacteria growth in the mouth which may cause tooth decay and dental erosion. When given the choice, water is best for hydration. For more information on sport drinks click here.
ALLOWING CHILDREN TO PLAY SPORTS WITHOUT A MOUTH GUARD AND NOT MAKING SURE IT IS CLEANED PROPERLY
Mouth guards, also called mouth protectors, help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to your lips, tongue, face or jaw. They typically cover the upper teeth and are a great way to protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining. Knowing how to prevent injuries like these is especially important if you participate in organized sports or other recreational activities. For more information click here.

Please note: Results vary for everyone and are dependant on ones dental health and the treatment you choose.

What you eat and drink affects your oral health! Choose wisely and protect your smile!

Your body is a complex machine. The foods you choose and how often you eat them can affect your general health and the health of your teeth and gums, too. If you consume too many sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks or non-nutritious snacks, you could be at risk for tooth decay. Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease, but the good news is that it is entirely preventable.

Tooth decay happens when plaque come into contact with sugar in the mouth, causing acid to attack the teeth.
Foods that contain sugars of any kind can contribute to tooth decay. To control the amount of sugar you eat, read the nutrition facts and ingredient labels on foods and beverages and choose options that are lowest in sugar. Common sources of sugar in the diet include soft drinks, candy, cookies and pastries. Your physician or a registered dietitian can also provide suggestions for eating a nutritious diet. If your diet lacks certain nutrients, it may be more difficult for tissues in your mouth to resist infection. This may contribute to gum disease. Severe gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Many researchers believe that the disease progresses faster and is potentially more severe in people with poor nutrition.

Wise choices

For healthy living and for healthy teeth and gums, think before you eat and drink. It’s not only what you eat but when you eat that can affect your dental health. Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. If you are on a special diet, keep your physician's advice in mind when choosing foods.
For good dental health, keep these tips in mind when choosing your meals and snacks:
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • whole grains
  • fruits
  • vegetables
  • lean beef, skinless poultry and fish; dry beans, peas and other legumes
  • low-fat and fat-free dairy foods
For good dental health, always remember to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste floss daily and visit your dentist regularly. With regular dental care, your dentist can help prevent oral problems from occurring in the first place and catch those that do occur in the early stages, while they are easy to treat. (ADD)

Limit the number of snacks you eat. If you do snack, choose something that is healthy like fruit or vegetables or a piece of cheese. Foods that are eaten as part of a meal cause less harm to teeth than eating lots of snacks throughout the day, because more saliva is released during a meal. Saliva helps wash foods from the mouth and lessens the effects of acids, which can harm teeth and cause cavities.
