Are you using tobacco, ecstasy, marijuana, heroine, amphetamines, methamphetamines drugs, alcohol and replacement therapies? Below is a list of the drugs and their effect on your teeth and oral health.
Tobacco, Ecstasy, Amphetamines and Methamphetamines: These drugs can cause constriction of the capillaries in your gums affecting the attachment of the bone to the tissue of the teeth which may lead to tooth loss.
Marijuana, Ecstasy, Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, Heroin and Replacement Therapies: These drugs may decrease the production of saliva in your mouth causing dry mouth which will increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
Ecstasy, Marijuana and Heroin: These drugs cause sugar cravings. Consumption of sweets and sugary drinks weaken the tooth enamel.
Alcohol: When drinking alcohol your mouth is exposed to increased levels of sugars and acids. This can be damaging to your teeth. Also vomiting after having alcohol may lead to tooth erosion. It is also important to know that according to the Canadian Cancer Society, the risk of developing oral cancer increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Drinking alcohol is the second major risk factor for developing oral cancer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DENTAL X-RAYS - Dentists Brampton


Along with a dental examination dental x-rays are an important part of your dental health. Dental x-rays help your dentist diagnose cavities (that can not be seen by a visual examination), cracks in the tooth, diseases in the bone, periodontal or gum disease, infections underneath the gum, bone loss, abscesses, cysts or tumors.

X-rays can help diagnose problems early, when they are easily treatable and cost a lot less money. It is better to have a small filling done then to let it go until you are in pain. If there is pain or infection this means you have let the problem get too far and may need a lot of treatment which also increases time of treatment and cost.

On an individual basis, your dentist decides how often to take x-rays depending on the health of the oral cavity. If you are prone to cavities or have a lot of bone loss the dentist might suggest more frequent x-rays, then someone who has no bone loss and not prone to decay.

WHAT IS DENTAL FLUOROSIS AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

Dental fluorosis is caused by excessive amounts of high concentration fluoride exposure during tooth development. It often appears as faint white streaks on enamel in most mild cases and in the most severe cases will appear as a brown mottled spots on the teeth. Usually it is a combination of fluoride sources which lead to the over exposure.  Children between the ages of 1 – 4 are at critical age of exposure. A child is no longer at risk after the age of 8 because all of the teeth have been developed already.


Since fluorosis is permanent and will not go away over time there are some ways to reduce its appearance. Most cases of fluorosis are mild and cannot be easily seen, but for more severe cases there are options such as bonding resin on fronts of teeth affected or veneers. Unfortunately, teeth whitening will often make the stains and white streaks have an almost chalky appearance which will still stand out from the regular tooth colour. The best way to find a solution which will work best for your specific case is to meet with a dental professional.

What you eat and drink affects your oral health! Choose wisely and protect your smile!

Your body is a complex machine. The foods you choose and how often you eat them can affect your general health and the health of your teeth and gums, too. If you consume too many sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks or non-nutritious snacks, you could be at risk for tooth decay. Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease, but the good news is that it is entirely preventable.

Tooth decay happens when plaque come into contact with sugar in the mouth, causing acid to attack the teeth.
Foods that contain sugars of any kind can contribute to tooth decay. To control the amount of sugar you eat, read the nutrition facts and ingredient labels on foods and beverages and choose options that are lowest in sugar. Common sources of sugar in the diet include soft drinks, candy, cookies and pastries. Your physician or a registered dietitian can also provide suggestions for eating a nutritious diet. If your diet lacks certain nutrients, it may be more difficult for tissues in your mouth to resist infection. This may contribute to gum disease. Severe gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Many researchers believe that the disease progresses faster and is potentially more severe in people with poor nutrition.



Wise choices

For healthy living and for healthy teeth and gums, think before you eat and drink. It’s not only what you eat but when you eat that can affect your dental health. Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. If you are on a special diet, keep your physician's advice in mind when choosing foods.
For good dental health, keep these tips in mind when choosing your meals and snacks:
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • whole grains
  • fruits
  • vegetables
  • lean beef, skinless poultry and fish; dry beans, peas and other legumes
  • low-fat and fat-free dairy foods
For good dental health, always remember to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste floss daily and visit your dentist regularly. With regular dental care, your dentist can help prevent oral problems from occurring in the first place and catch those that do occur in the early stages, while they are easy to treat. (ADD)

Limit the number of snacks you eat. If you do snack, choose something that is healthy like fruit or vegetables or a piece of cheese. Foods that are eaten as part of a meal cause less harm to teeth than eating lots of snacks throughout the day, because more saliva is released during a meal. Saliva helps wash foods from the mouth and lessens the effects of acids, which can harm teeth and cause cavities.
