Dental Sealants - Kids Dentist Brampton

Dental Sealants, Brampton Family Dentist, Kids Dentist Brampton, Oral Health, Brampton,
Sealants are a tooth coloured coating that is applied to the biting surface of the back teeth. The grooves on the top of the molars are very deep and is a good area for bacteria to live in and multiply. Even with great oral hygiene some of these areas will still get a cavity because the bristles of the tooth brush can not get to these deep areas. Dental sealants act as a barrier against decay-causing bacteria.

When applied it fills in the pit and groves and makes a smooth surface.  Easy for a tooth brush to keep clean. The application of a sealant is quick, easy and painless. No drilling or freezing are required. Sealants also cost less than having a cavity filled.

After having a sealant placed you should continue to brush and floss properly.

Following Canada’s Food Guide, which is low in sugar and high in nutrition, is recommended.

FLOSSING - Clean Between Your Teeth

Dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Offices, Kids Dentist, Brampton Family Dentist,
Let’s face it – many people are still not flossing. This is a big problem if you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy for life. Flossing at least once a day cleans between the teeth and under the gumline where your toothbrush can’t reach and where most cavities and gum disease start. If you’re not flossing, you’re missing 35% of every tooth. It you haven’t flossed recently, it’ll take a while before flossing becomes an automatic part of your daily routine. Quick Tip: Floss every night before you brush, for maximum benefit. But soon your teeth won’t feel clean without it. Don’t worry if at first flossing causes slight bleeding, but if the bleeding continues for more than ten days, contact your dentist.

Here’s how to floss: Carefully ease the floss between the teeth, right down to the gumline. Gently wipe plaque from both sides of adjacent teeth. The goal is to arc the floss in a “C” shape following the contours of each tooth. Quick Tip: Beginners should start with waxed shred-resistant floss because it slides between the teeth more easily. INVISALIGN BRACES FOR ADULTS AND KIDS #Dentist #Brampton

Sure, there are other options out there for straightening your teeth, but none offer the level of comfort, convenience and confidence that you'll find with Invisalign®. And no matter what stage you're at in life, you'll appreciate how Invisalign's cutting-edge approach to treatment has minimal interference in how you live, but has a significant positive impact on how you look and feel about yourself.

The Clear Aligner are virtually invisible.
They are smooth and comfortable aligners.
The aligners are removable for easy cleaning.
You can eat what ever you want.
They do not require brackets or wires.
And it is easier to brush, floss and clean your teeth.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF STRAIGHTS TEETH

You may be surprised to know that the benefits of having properly aligned teeth extend far beyond a confident smile. According to the American Dental Association, straightening your teeth can actually significantly affect your overall dental health.1 Think about it — a smile can hardly be perfect if it's not a healthy one. Fortunately, with Invisalign®, having a confident smile and reducing your risk for tooth decay and gum disease go hand in hand.

HEALTHIER TEETH AND GUMS

Swollen, red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of periodontal disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defence against potential periodontal problems. With Invisalign, the comfortable/clear aligners, gently and gradually begin to move your teeth into the proper position without unsightly brackets and wires.

EASIER CLEANING

One of the biggest challenges of having braces is removing all the food that gets trapped in the brackets and wires. This can often lead to plaque buildup and eventually tooth decay. With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so it’s easy to continue brushing and flossing the way you normally do.

OVERALL HEALTH

Think of your teeth as a window to the health of your body. Your teeth and gums — and how they look to others when you smile—say a lot about your overall health. If you're taking good care of both, you're probably taking good care of the rest of you. Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss. Studies by the American Dental Association have shown that oral infections can also lead to other more serious ailments such as heart disease, stroke, pneumonia and diabetes5. Invisalign aligners make daily oral hygiene easier, thus reducing the risk of possible problems. And correctly aligned teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems, and increased wear on the tooth enamel. Invisalign effectively addresses all of these orthodontic issues, so you'll have the confidence of a great smile and increase the likelihood of improved oral health.

BRINGING AWARENESS TO ABUSE OF OLDER ADULTS

Jessica SAYS!

Definition - "A single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship of trust, that causes harm or distress to an older person."

Elder abuse has become a domestic concern in Canada and the United States. People in the older populations are maintaining their dentition and seek care in dentistry. The dental practitioner is in a unique position to be aware of the obvious and subtle evidence of elder abuse. Two thirds of injuries sustained in abuse of older adults can be easily found during a routine oral examination. Over half of these injuries occur in the head and neck region. By 2026 every 5th Canadian will be older than 65 years. Elder abuse is complex and multiple factors may contribute. Some causes may include; Lack of understanding of needs and abilities. Discriminatory beliefs, including Ageism. Continuance of pre-existing abuse. A clear power and control imbalance.

Types of abuse include (and may also be criminal code offences); Physical, sexual, psychological, financial, neglect, violation of rights. Possible indicators may include; fear/ depression, visible cuts, scratches, bruises, swelling, burns, disclosure, difficulty walking/ standing, decrease in self-esteem, unable to meet expenses, suspicious looking signatures on cheques, a person showing unusual interest in the older adult's financial affairs, malnourishment, missing dentures, glasses or hearing aides. Risk factors for being abused; Living alone; being socially isolated; having dementia. Older adults may not be able to communicate their abuse.

There is support for older adults facing abuse. Click on the link below for contact numbers and information.

NUTRITION TIPS

It is very important to try to avoid acidic foods and drinks between meals, because there isn’t as much saliva in your mouth at these times to protect your teeth. Also, be sure to wait about an hour to clean your teeth after eating. If you brush while the acids are still in your mouth you are removing some of your teeth’s surface. If you wait about an hour the saliva will help your teeth battle the acid so it is safe to brush. Try to finish your meals with a little cheese or milk as these products help cut down on the acid in your mouth.

INVISALIGN - CREATING GREAT SMILES

Dr. McArthur SAYS!

best dentist brampton, brampton, brampton family dentist, dentist, dentist in brampton, invisalign braces,Most adults  and some teens would feel uncomfortable wearing braces.  Invisalign is virtually undetectable when worn. Therefore the patient can smile with confidence while their teeth are being straightened. The cheeks and lips do not get sore like they can from the brackets and wires of conventional braces and there are no effects on speech.

Invisalign is a method of straightening teeth without using brackets and wires. Clear plastic aligners are like thin mouth guards. These aligners gradually move teeth (or align teeth) into their correct position. Approximately every 2 weeks you place new aligners and these are worn for 22 out of 24 hours daily. They are removable for eating, brushing and flossing, dental cleanings or restorations. This makes it easy taking care of your oral health during treatment.

Invisalign can give you a wonderful new smile without sacrificing convenience and comfort. We have a monitor in our waiting room with an interesting video where you can learn more about this wonderful process which has now been used to treat millions of people.

SPACE MAINTAINERS

Joanna SAYS!

Dentist Brampton, Brampton Family Dentist, Best dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Office, Tooth Extraction, Space Maintainer,
A space maintainer is a fixed or removable appliance which is used to hold the space of a baby tooth which has been removed early. The cause of the early loss may be due to natural causes or extracted due to extensive dental decay. It is important to keep the space clear for the adult tooth to erupt properly, if not, other teeth may shift into the spot and future orthodontic treatment may be needed. It is important to consult with a dental professional to determine if a space maintainer will be necessary and if one is placed on the child’s dentition how to properly clean and care for it.

DENTAL INSURANCE - If you don't use it, you will lose it!

Mira SAYS!
dentist brampton, brampton family dentist, brampton dental office, insurance,
Have you been putting off your dental treatment?
The end of the year is fast approaching and due to our busy lives, many of us have been putting off our dental  cleanings, fillings, crownsbridges, or even getting that impression done for a night guard. Each year we receive an individual dollar amount maximum from our insurance company. If this amount is not used, by the end of the year, it does not roll over to the next and is unfortunately lost. Be sure to check with your dental office to find out if you have any outstanding dental work so that you can get the best out of your dental coverage.

Remember: If you don't use it, you will lose it!

UNDERSTAND YOUR DENTAL INSURANCE - Waiving - Co-Payment

Mira SAYS!
Dentist in Brampton Ontario, Dental insurance, Waiving the co-Payment, Brampton Family Dentist, Brampton Dental Office,
We are asked on occasion if we can waive the deductible or co-payment that a patient needs to pay and the answer is "no." It is against the law for a dental office not to collect the deductible or co-payment. Not only is it insurance fraud, but it is against the regulations of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) that regulates dentists. This practice is considered to be professional misconduct and a dentist can lose his/her license and receive a fine.

As a dental office we are here to provide the services and information on available treatment options appropriate to address your dental needs regardless of the nature and extent of your dental coverage and we can also assist you in receiving the benefits that you are entitled to under your dental plan.

It is very important to understand your dental plan as it is a valuable benefit. Many employers provide benefits, in addition to salaries, as a method of paying their employees. In order to be able to offer dental plans to their employees, companies design  the benefit package so that the employee shares in the cost of their dental care. Below is information on frequently asked questions with respect to insurance plans, deductibles, co-payment and co-insurance as answered by the Ontario Dental Association.

What plan limitations are employers using to involve the employee in dental care costs?

Some of the most common benefit plan designs currently being offered are:
(1) Annual Deductible Amounts - In this case, the employee may be required to pay the first $25 or $50 claimed every year.
(2) Frequency limitations - Dental plans may limit the number of visits to the dentist each year that will be covered by the insurance plan
(3) Annual Dollar Maximums Employers may create a maximum limit (e.g., $1,500) that the dental plan will cover each year.
(4) Co-Payment (or co-insurance) Through a sharing formula specified in the dental plan contract, the dental plan may only cover a percentage of the eligible amount claimed. The employee is responsible for paying the remainder.

When are co-payments used?

Co-payments are sometimes applied to diagnostic, preventative and basic services, but they are more frequently applied to comprehensive or extensive services such as endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics and orthodontics. Sometimes your plan will cover 80 percent of the bill leaving you to pay the other 20 percent (an 80 – 20 co-pay), other times, it could be on a 50 – 50 basis, or even other amounts. It all depends on the plan.

How do co-payments work?

Here’s how it works: Your dentist bills you for $100 for your dental treatment. Before the claim form goes to your insurance company, you sign the claim form, verifying that the charge is accurate and that you are financially responsible to the dentist for the entire charge. This is an important step because your dental plan may not cover the whole bill. For example, if your plan pays 80 percent of an eligible expense of $100, your insurance company will cover the first $80 leaving you responsible for paying the remaining $20 as an out- of-pocket expense.

Do I have to pay the co-payment?

Yes. It is against the law (insurance fraud) for you or your dentist to conspire to avoid paying the co-payment. Not only is it a violation of the law, but it is contrary to the regulations of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) that regulates the dental profession. This practice is considered professional misconduct and a dentist can lose his license for it, as well as incurring hefty fines, often exceeding $10,000.
By law, a claim made to an insurance company must be an accurate description of services rendered and fees charged. This is why you are required to sign the claim form before it is submitted to your insurance company.

How would an insurance company know that I did not pay my share?

Insurance companies reserve the right to request that the patient provide proof that the co-payment has actually been paid. If the patient is unable to provide that proof, the insurance company may demand that the patient make financial restitution to the insurance company or it may apply the over-payment to future claims payments.

What if my dentist gives me a discount on certain fees?

Your dentist may do this but this is very different from waiving a co-payment. If your dentist discounts his/her fee to you by a certain percentage, then that discounted fee must be the fee submitted to your insurance company as the whole fee charged for the services rendered.
Your dental plan is a valuable benefit. Before you ask your dentist to waive a co-payment, think about the consequences to you and your dentist.

For more information on your dental benefits be sure to contact your insurance company or call our office and we can assist you in understanding your benefits.

Steps Used for Dental Instruments Sterilization

Joanna Says!
Dentist in Brampton, Brampton Family Dentist, Dental instrument Sterilization, Brampton Dental Office,
Steps used for sterilization:

1. Instruments are first cleaned with a disinfectant to remove any remaining debris
2. Placed into an ultrasonic bath where high frequency pressure forms tiny bubbles act on debris to remove it from dental tools.
3. Then are removed and dried before placing in a sterilization pouch which includes a coloured marking to indicate if they have been sterilized properly.
4. The pouches then put through an autoclave which uses a combination of pressure, steam and high temperature for a certain length of time to kill all the microorganisms.
5. After the full cycle is complete and instruments are fully dry, they are removed from the cassette (still wrapped in the pouches) and checked to insure proper sterilization has been reached.
6. Finally, the sterile packs are placed in a clean, dry area until ready for use.

If you have any questions on how your dental office sterilizes its dental equipment be sure to ask at your next visit to your dental office!

REASONS WHY YOU MAY NEED INVISALIGN OR BRACES

Malocclusion or a bad bite is when your top and bottom teeth do not fit together properly when biting. A reason for this could be missing, crooked, crowded or protruding teeth. Thumb or finger sucking may also be a contributor. In some cases, malocclusion or a bad bite, makes it harder for an individual to chew certain foods and due to the position of the teeth, some teeth may wear down. It may also cause teeth and jaw pain and tension. Teeth that stick out, also known as buck teeth, are more susceptible to being chipped or broken. Teeth that are crowded and crooked are harder to clean, when brushing and flossing and may be more likely to get cavities and/or gum disease. The position of your teeth and jaw has a great effect on your bite, so the sooner it is fixed the healthier your body and smile will be.

Different types of orthodontic treatments are available for fixing malocclusion or a bad bite, from traditional braces to Invisalign. Be sure to visit our office to find out what treatment is best for you.

BLACK HAIRY TONGUE

Kam SAYS!
Although the cause of black hairy tongue is unknown, it has been suggested that some of the causes may be due to poor oral hygiene, antibiotic use, smoking, breathing through the mouth or not enough saliva is produced. It is a painless condition that occurs when the little bumps on your tongue grow long and they trap the bacteria that live in your mouth. It makes your tongue look black and hairy. Brushing your tongue with a soft bristle toothbrush or using a tongue scraper will help, however for proper diagnosis of your individual case be sure to see your dentist as soon as possible.

PROPER TOOLS FOR CLEANING AROUND CROWNS, IMPLANTS OR BRIDGES

Joanna SAYS!

dentist brampton, dental crown dental office brampton,
Dental bridges, crowns and implants take special attention when caring for your overall oral health. With a dental bridge the key is cleaning efficiently under the abutment tooth (replaces the tooth that is missing) to ensure food or bacteria won’t get trapped underneath. For a crown and implant depending on the shape of them, there may be more food and plaque getting trapped in and around the adjacent teeth.

Cleaning Aids for Dental Bridge, Implant, or Crown

SuperFloss:  Starts with a stiff end of floss for threading under bridge, followed by a fluffier middle section of floss for filling the space under the abutment and ending with regular floss for cleaning the remaining teeth.

Interdental Brushes: A small cylindrical brush used to clean in between teeth and comes in a variety of sizes. Easier to use if the dental bridge is located further back in the mouth and difficult to thread superfloss under.

*When cleaning an implant, make sure it doesn’t have a metal wire component to avoid scratching the implant under the crown.

*Waterpik: A pulsating water device used to clean around difficult to reach areas with regular floss.

To find which tool is right for you be sure to ask your dental professional at your next check-up and cleaning appointment.

DENTAL FLUOROSIS

Joanna SAYS!

Dental fluorosis is caused by excessive amounts of high concentration fluoride exposure during tooth development. It often appears as faint white streaks on enamel in most mild cases and in the most severe cases will appear as a brown mottled spots on the teeth. Usually it is a combination of fluoride sources which lead to the over exposure.  Children between the ages of 1 – 4 are at critical age of exposure. A child is no longer at risk after the age of 8 because all of the teeth have been developed already.

Since fluorosis is permanent and will not go away over time there are some ways to reduce its appearance. Most cases of fluorosis are mild and cannot be seen easily, but for more severe cases there are options such as bonding resin on fronts of teeth affected or veneers. Unfortunately, teeth whitening will often make the stains and white streaks have an almost chalky appearance which will still stand out from the regular tooth colour. The best way to find a solution which will work best for your specific case is to meet with a dental professional.
