When going to a new dental office everyone is asked to complete a medical history form. It is very important to complete the form thoroughly and include all medical conditions, medications, allergies, surgeries and treatments which have happened in the past or are currently being done. Some health conditions which may not seem important for a dental professional to be aware of can have significant effects on your oral health and some which require premedication before beginning dental procedures.
Medications being taken including herbal, vitamins, prescribed and over the counter might need preauthorization from a physician before beginning particular procedures or can effect another medication needed to help with oral health conditions.
At each dental visit your dental professional must be told about any changes that have occurred since last visits medical history update. Including changes with medications, recent hospital visits, new allergies or conditions being treated by a physician. With this information your dental professional will be able to provide you with treatment options that are safe for your oral health and overall health.
