The main cause of periodontal (gum) disease is plaque. When plaque hardens it turns into calculus/tartar and if not properly removed it can cause tooth decay and/or periodontal disease. This is why it is important to visit your dentists/hygienist regularly, every 3-6 months, for your dental cleaning and check up.
