NUTRITION TIPS

It is very important to try to avoid acidic foods and drinks between meals, because there isn’t as much saliva in your mouth at these times to protect your teeth. Also, be sure to wait about an hour to clean your teeth after eating. If you brush while the acids are still in your mouth you are removing some of your teeth’s surface. If you wait about an hour the saliva will help your teeth battle the acid so it is safe to brush. Try to finish your meals with a little cheese or milk as these products help cut down on the acid in your mouth.

CELEBRITIES SWEAR BY IT, BUT WHAT DOES LEMON WATER DO TO YOUR TEETH?

Dr. Elizabeth SAYS!

Drinking lemon water has many health benefits.  It hydrates the body, detoxes the liver, cleanses the skin and improves overall health.  Many celebrities, like BeyoncĂ©, Gwyneth Paltrow and even my favourite leadership coaches Deepak Chopra and Robin Sharma have talked about how drinking lemon water is part of their daily ritual. Jennifer Aniston apparently begins every morning "with a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice to flush out her body." I hope their dentists share with them the effects lemon water has on tooth enamel. Lemon water is acidic. It causes irreversible erosion of the enamel of teeth.  This can lead to translucent, sensitive teeth.

Here are some ways to minimize the acid erosion of lemon water on your teeth:

1. Drink lemon water through a straw, to minimize contact with teeth.
2. Rinse pure water after drinking lemon water.
3. Do not brush for 30mins after drinking lemon water.
4. Make fluoridated toothpaste part of your oral hygiene regimen
(Consider Toothpaste that is specially designed to protect against
enamel erosion and reduces sensitivity)
5. Let us know if you already have enamel erosion.
