DENTAL IMPLANTS
Dental implants are essentially artificial tooth roots. They can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth, support a denture or restore an entire mouth. Implants come in different shapes and textures and are made of titanium. Titanium unlike other metals is not rejected by the body. It is very strong and is biologically inert. To be a candidate for a dental implant two criteria must be met. Your gum tissue should be healthy overall and there must be enough bone present to support the implant. Following the extraction of a tooth the supporting bone begins to shrink both in height and width. Even if the bone shrinkage has been excessive an implant may still be an option. Depending on the situation, we may be able to grow back the lost bone using regenerative procedures so that an implant can be placed. Implants can also be used to support a bridge, a removable denture or a fixed denture.

CAN A TOOTH BE REPLACED? Bridge/Implants/Dentures
Bridge/Implants/Dentures (Prosthodontics)
Can A Tooth Be Replaced?
You can diligently floss and brush your teeth and still lose a tooth, to gum disease or accident. If this happens, the tooth should be replaced in order to restore your smile, regain your chewing and prevent other teeth from shifting. There are three main types of artificial teeth and each one is designed for a particular situation. They are dental implants, removable dentures and fixed bridges.
A DENTAL IMPLANT is made by surgically placing one or more small metal posts beneath the gum into the jawbone. In a few months, when they are attached to the surrounding bone, they are exposed and have the artificial tooth or teeth attached to them.
A REMOVABLE DENTURE replaces all of the lost teeth in the arch with one appliance. The denture is held in place by clasping some of the remaining teeth or by suction where none of the natural teeth are left.
A FIXED BRIDGE is a replacement that is cemented to the adjacent teeth and cannot be removed.
Information supplied by the Ontario Dental Association.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THEIR DENTAL VISIT - DENTIST BRAMPTON
Daniella SAYS!
To help the dental visit go more smoothly:
1. Tell your child about the visit but limit the amount of details given.
2. Answer any questions with simple, to-the-point, answers. Let the dentist answer more complex or detailed questions as dentists are trained to describe things to children in a non-threatening and easy-to-understand language.
3. Be careful of the words that you use such as "hurt" and "pain."
4. Be sure not to tell your child about an unpleasant dental experience that you've had.
5. Explain things in a matter that they'll understand how important it is to maintain healthy teeth and gums and that the dentist is a friendly doctor whose job it is to help do this.
6. Don't promise a reward for going to the dentist.
Ways a dentist can calm an anxious child:
1. Voice control. The dentist uses a friendly voice, which could become firmer if necessary.
2. Simple instructions. The dentist will use simple words (tell, show, do) to explain a procedure and may demonstrate the procedure on a doll or another person before performing the procedure on the child.

4. Distraction. The dentist will tell stories or engage the child in conversation to draw the child's attention away from the work being completed.
5. Nonverbal communication. The dentist uses body language, such as a simple smile to reinforce positive behaviour.
6. Sedation. The dentist may use sedation to help the child relax and be more comfortable, if necessary. The two most common types of sedation that might be used in children are nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") or an oral sedative (such as Valium).

WHAT IS PERIODONTICS? Dentist/Periodontist Brampton
Periodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the diseases and conditions of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes. The term is derived from the Greek word peri, for around, and odont, for tooth. The destruction of the supporting tissues around teeth is primarily due to bacterial accumulation from improper cleaning. Most people will have some form of periodontal disease during their lifetime. The majority can be treated by their family dentist. However, when the disease progresses so that pockets are formed and bone loss occurs, then more advanced treatment by a periodontist is recommended.
A periodontist in Ontario must successfully complete a general dental degree and a two- or three-year postgraduate training in periodontics at an accredited facility (or its equivalent) and pass a specialty examination before being licensed. Periodontists are trained in many surgical procedures, such as bone grafting, sinus lifting, and implant placement, as well as the surgical and non-surgical treatment of periodontal diseases and the diagnosis, treatment planning and maintenance of the dental implant and its supporting structures.
Information is per the Ontario Dental Association.
THE IMPORTANCE OF VISITING YOUR DENTIST DURING PREGNANCY!
Are you pregnant? Did you know that during pregnancy gingivitis may occur between the second and eighth month?
Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, can be easily prevented by visiting your dentist regularly during your pregnancy. Your dentist or dental hygienist may recommend more frequent professional dental cleanings during the second or early third trimester to help reduce the chance of developing gingivitis. HEALTHY BODY AND TEETH - Nutrition Information
Parm SAYS!
Calcium is an important component of a healthy diet and a mineral necessary for life. It helps promote healthy strength of the bone and teeth. Calcium-fortified drinks such as juices, milk and other dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D. Hard cheeses are also very good for the teeth as they help release a burst of calcium that mixes with plaque and sticks to the teeth, protecting them from the acid that causes decay.
Crisp fruits and raw vegetables, like apples, carrots and celery, help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath. Antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin C, and other nutrients from fruits and vegetables help protect gums and other tissues from cell damage and bacterial infection. Folic acid is also important to have in a healthy diet. It helps promote a healthy mouth and supports cell growth throughout the entire body. Folic acid can be found mainly in dark green leafy vegetables. It is also very important to avoid or limit the foods that cause and promote cavities in the mouth. Some of the cavity-causing organisms in the mouth feed on the sugar in foods such as soda, sugary drinks/candies and convert it to acid, which attacks tooth enamel and causes tooth decay.
An acidic environment in the mouth can also cause problems with the teeth. Acidic foods and drinks such as carbonated drinks, citrus fruit juices, wine, pickles and honey can cause tooth enamel to weaken, wear away and teeth to become sensitive, cracked and discolored. Foods that take a long time to chew or that you hold in your mouth (such as cough drops) can damage teeth as they hold sugar against teeth longer than other foods do. Be sure to avoid snacking on sugary, carbohydrate-rich or acidic foods throughout the day, these foods should be consumed during meal times in order to decrease the amount exposed to time the teeth. The mouth produces more saliva to help digest larger meals, which then washes away more food and helps neutralize harmful acids before they can attack the teeth.
A healthy diet and nutritional counselling is becoming an increasingly important aspect of preventive dentistry and the general health. It is very important to understand the quality, consistency, nutritional composition, and combinations in which foods are eaten for healthier teeth and body.
The new generation is clearly gearing towards a healthier diet to achieve a healthy physique and to maintain optimal levels of body's performance. A diet consisting of antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and some alternate foods such as soy foods, can help strengthen immunity and improve the body’s ability to combat bacteria. In other words, inflammation in the body can be avoided with more force when proper nutrients are absorbed through a complete diet. This can also help protect the teeth and gums. A healthy diet can also aid in the prevention of cavity-causing bacteria attacks. To make sure that your body obtains all the necessary nutrients and vitamins, it is best to follow Canada's Food Guide.

NUTRITION TIPS
It is very important to try to avoid acidic foods and drinks between meals, because there isn’t as much saliva in your mouth at these times to protect your teeth. Also, be sure to wait about an hour to clean your teeth after eating. If you brush while the acids are still in your mouth you are removing some of your teeth’s surface. If you wait about an hour the saliva will help your teeth battle the acid so it is safe to brush. Try to finish your meals with a little cheese or milk as these products help cut down on the acid in your mouth.

INVISALIGN - CREATING GREAT SMILES
Dr. McArthur SAYS!
Most adults and some teens would feel uncomfortable wearing braces. Invisalign is virtually undetectable when worn. Therefore the patient can smile with confidence while their teeth are being straightened. The cheeks and lips do not get sore like they can from the brackets and wires of conventional braces and there are no effects on speech.

Invisalign is a method of straightening teeth without using brackets and wires. Clear plastic aligners are like thin mouth guards. These aligners gradually move teeth (or align teeth) into their correct position. Approximately every 2 weeks you place new aligners and these are worn for 22 out of 24 hours daily. They are removable for eating, brushing and flossing, dental cleanings or restorations. This makes it easy taking care of your oral health during treatment.
Invisalign can give you a wonderful new smile without sacrificing convenience and comfort. We have a monitor in our waiting room with an interesting video where you can learn more about this wonderful process which has now been used to treat millions of people.
For more information or to find out if Invisalign is right for you be sure to contact our office.
