TOOTH WHITENING – Want Whiter, Brighter Teeth?

The best way to keep your teeth white is to brush twice a day, floss daily, see your dentist for regular checkups and professional cleanings, and limit stain-causing foods and habits. These include: tobacco, certain foods and beverages (such as coffee, tea and berries), some drugs (such as tetracycline), or trauma to a tooth. As well, your teeth may become stained or discoloured naturally as you age. Your dentist can give you the best advice about whitening your teeth.

HERE’S HOW IT’S DONE:

Chairside Bleaching – usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes and one to three visits to the dental office. A shield (or rubber dam) protects your gums from the bleaching agent (usually a form or hydrogen peroxide) which is “painted” onto your discoloured teeth and activated with heat or high-intensity light.

Mouthguard Bleaching – is done by you at home. You wear a custom-made mouthguard with special bleaching gel (provided by your dentist) for a period of time each day, or overnight, over a number of weeks.

It’s important to know that not everyone’s teeth will “whiten” the same. It depends on the number of teeth involved and the severity of discolouration. Over-the-counter, at-home whiteners are not recommended because they may cause problems associated with over exposing gum tissues to the active whitening agent. Any bleaching treatment should be done under your dentist’s supervision.

Information as per the Ontario Dental Association.

We have three different whitening systems be sure to contact one of our dental professionals for more information.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GUM DISEASE

Gum Disease Risks

Gum disease is an infection that can cause tooth loss; it is associated with several serious health conditions including heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. After having an examination of your gums and bone you should ask your periodontist or dentist if you have gum disease. While genetics plays a role in gum disease you can still have gum disease even though your parents and siblings were never affected by it.

Gum Disease Symptoms

The presence of any of these symptoms warrants a complete examination for gum disease by a periodontist or dentist.
  • Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating.

  • Gum recession, which results in teeth looking longer.

  • Loose teeth and shifting tooth positions where teeth no longer touch.

  • Tooth loss, a consequence of gum disease.

Because gum disease can begin and progress without obvious symptoms, an examination of your gums and jaw bones is the only accurate way to determine if you have gum disease. This includes measuring the depth of the gum pockets and using x-rays to determine the bone level.

Health Conditions and Gum Disease

Gum disease is associated with many health conditions. For example heart attacks and strokes are more common when gum disease exists. Gum disease complicates blood sugar management for the diabetic and high blood sugar worsens gum disease.

As a woman, the hormonal changes during pregnancy impact your gums. Some research has suggested having gum disease can increase the risk that your infant will be born premature and or/ be low weight. You should ask your periodontist or dentist regarding oral health complications during pregnancy.

What You Can Do about Gum Disease?
  • Early detection and treatment of gum disease by a periodontist can help you preserve your teeth and smile for life. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease.

  • Smoking is a risk factor for gum disease, oral cancer and many other diseases. It also adversely affects healing and increases the likelihood of an infection following any type of surgery. Your periodontist or dentist and other health professionals can help you quit.

  • Brushing and flossing every day is a very important behavior to prevent decay and gum disease.

Proper Way to FLOSS

Flossing

Flossing removes plaque and bacteria that you cannot reach with your toothbrush. If you don't floss, you are missing more than one-third of your tooth surface. Plaque is the main cause of gum disease. It is an invisible bacterial film that develops on your teeth every day.

Within 24 to 36 hours, plaque hardens into tartar (also called calculus), which can only be removed by professional cleaning. Floss at least once a day, and plaque never gets the chance to harden into tartar. Getting into the habit of daily flossing is easier when you floss while doing something else like watching TV or listening to music, for example.

How to floss your teeth

Dental Offices in Brampton, Brampton Dentists, Dentists in Brampton, Brampton Dental Cleaning,

Step 1

Take a length of floss equal to the distance from your hand to your shoulder.Wrap it around your index and middle fingers, leaving about two inches between your hands.

Step 2

Slide the floss between your teeth and wrap it into a "C" shape around the base of the tooth and gently under the gumline. Wipe the tooth from base to tip two or three times.

Step 3

Be sure to floss both sides of every tooth. Don't forget the backs of your last molars. Go to a new section of the floss as it wears and picks up particles.

Thumbsucking and Pacifier Use

Thumbsucking, Pacifier Use, Brampton Dental Offices,
Thumbsucking is a natural reflex for children. Sucking on thumbs, fingers, pacifiers or other objects may make babies feel secure and happy and help them learn about their world.
Young children may also suck to soothe themselves and help them fall asleep.

How Can Thumbsucking Affect My Child's Teeth?

After permanent teeth come in, sucking may cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and alignment of the teeth. It can also cause changes in the roof of the mouth.
Pacifiers can affect the teeth essentially the same ways as sucking fingers and thumbs, but it is often an easier habit to break.
The intensity of the sucking is a factor that determines whether or not dental problems may result. If children rest their thumbs passively in their mouths, they are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs. Some aggressive thumbsuckers may develop problems with their baby (primary) teeth.

When Do Children Stop Sucking Their Thumbs?

Children usually stop sucking between the ages of two and four years old, or by the time the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. If you notice changes in your child’s primary teeth, or are concerned about your child’s thumbsucking consult your dentist.

How Can I Help My Child Stop Thumbsucking?

  • Praise your child for not sucking.
  • Children often suck their thumbs when feeling insecure or needing comfort. Focus on correcting the cause of the anxiety and provide comfort to your child.
  • For an older child, involve him or her in choosing the method of stopping.
  • Your dentist can offer encouragement to your child and explain what could happen to their teeth if they do not stop sucking.
If these tips don’t work, remind the child of their habit by bandaging the thumb or putting a sock on the hand at night. Your dentist or pediatrician may prescribe a bitter medication to coat the thumb or the use of a mouth appliance.

Common Mistakes Parents Make With Their Children's Dental Care - Brampton Dentists

Childs' First dental visit, Dental Info, Dental Facts, Top Dentist in Brampton, Brampton Dental offices, Dentists in Brampton, Dental Caries, BRINGING CHILDREN TO THEIR FIRST DENTAL VISIT TOO LATE
A child's first dental visit should be when the first tooth appears or by the age of 1, whichever comes first. It is the best practice to start a child on a good path and reduce early childhood caries. For more information click here.
ALLOWING CHILDREN TO BRUSH AND FLOSS THEIR TEETH ON THEIR OWN
It is very important to teach and help your child brush and floss their teeth to aid them in the right direction in maintaining proper care of their teeth at an early age. Being with them when they are brushing a parent can ensure that they do not rush their brush and brush for at least 2 minutes, covering all the teeth and surfaces.
THINKING THAT CAVITIES ON BABY TEETH DO NOT NEED TO BE FIXED
Some baby teeth will be in your child’s mouth until age 12 and the decayed tooth that needs to be fixed may be one of those. Decayed, broken or teeth that are infected can hurt your child’s oral and overall health and it may also affect the way your child feels about him or herself now and in the future. For more information click here.
ALLOWING CHILDREN TO DRINK SPORT DRINKS
The sugar and acid in energy drinks is a perfect recipe for bacteria growth in the mouth which may cause tooth decay and dental erosion. When given the choice, water is best for hydration. For more information on sport drinks click here.
ALLOWING CHILDREN TO PLAY SPORTS WITHOUT A MOUTH GUARD AND NOT MAKING SURE IT IS CLEANED PROPERLY
Mouth guards, also called mouth protectors, help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to your lips, tongue, face or jaw. They typically cover the upper teeth and are a great way to protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining. Knowing how to prevent injuries like these is especially important if you participate in organized sports or other recreational activities. For more information click here.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS (Endodontics) – What is Root Canal Treatment?

Today, with modern dentistry, root canal treatment has become a common form of treatment for diseased (abscessed) teeth. This treatment can be provided by your regular dentist or root canal specialist (Endodontist). Here’s how it’s done: In healthy teeth, the interior of the tooth is filled with tissue (pulp). Once the tooth is injured, cracked, or decayed, it is necessary to open the tooth and clean out the infected tissue in the centre. This space is then filled and the opening sealed. During the procedure the area around the tooth is frozen. Sometimes difficulties may be encountered during or after root canal treatment. This may require the use of medication or involve further treatment. A crown or cap may be necessary to protect the tooth, once the root canal treatment has been completed. Teeth that have had root canal treatment can stay as healthy and last as long as other teeth. In most instances, you won’t be able to feel or see a difference. Information as per the Ontario Dental Association.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DENTAL X-RAYS

Melissa SAYS!
Dentist Brampton, Dental x-Rays,
Along with a dental examination dental x-rays are an important part of your dental health. Dental x-rays help your dentist diagnose cavities (that can not be seen by a visual examination), cracks in the tooth, diseases in the bone, periodontal or gum disease, infections underneath the gum, bone loss, abscesses, cysts or tumors.

X-rays can help diagnose problems early, when they are easily treatable and cost a lot less money. It is better to have a small filling done then to let it go until you are in pain. If there is pain or infection this means you have let the problem get too far and may need a lot of treatment which also increases time of treatment and cost.

On an individual basis, your dentist decides how often to take x-rays depending on the health of the oral cavity. If you are prone to cavities or have a lot of bone loss the dentist might suggest more frequent x-rays, then someone who has no bone loss and not prone to decay.

At our office we take digital x-rays. For more information on this or other topics, be sure to contact one of our dental professionals.

FLOSSING - Clean Between Your Teeth

Dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Offices, Kids Dentist, Brampton Family Dentist,
Let’s face it – many people are still not flossing. This is a big problem if you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy for life. Flossing at least once a day cleans between the teeth and under the gumline where your toothbrush can’t reach and where most cavities and gum disease start. If you’re not flossing, you’re missing 35% of every tooth. It you haven’t flossed recently, it’ll take a while before flossing becomes an automatic part of your daily routine. Quick Tip: Floss every night before you brush, for maximum benefit. But soon your teeth won’t feel clean without it. Don’t worry if at first flossing causes slight bleeding, but if the bleeding continues for more than ten days, contact your dentist.

Here’s how to floss: Carefully ease the floss between the teeth, right down to the gumline. Gently wipe plaque from both sides of adjacent teeth. The goal is to arc the floss in a “C” shape following the contours of each tooth. Quick Tip: Beginners should start with waxed shred-resistant floss because it slides between the teeth more easily. INVISALIGN BRACES FOR ADULTS AND KIDS #Dentist #Brampton

Sure, there are other options out there for straightening your teeth, but none offer the level of comfort, convenience and confidence that you'll find with Invisalign®. And no matter what stage you're at in life, you'll appreciate how Invisalign's cutting-edge approach to treatment has minimal interference in how you live, but has a significant positive impact on how you look and feel about yourself.

The Clear Aligner are virtually invisible.
They are smooth and comfortable aligners.
The aligners are removable for easy cleaning.
You can eat what ever you want.
They do not require brackets or wires.
And it is easier to brush, floss and clean your teeth.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF STRAIGHTS TEETH

You may be surprised to know that the benefits of having properly aligned teeth extend far beyond a confident smile. According to the American Dental Association, straightening your teeth can actually significantly affect your overall dental health.1 Think about it — a smile can hardly be perfect if it's not a healthy one. Fortunately, with Invisalign®, having a confident smile and reducing your risk for tooth decay and gum disease go hand in hand.

HEALTHIER TEETH AND GUMS

Swollen, red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of periodontal disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defence against potential periodontal problems. With Invisalign, the comfortable/clear aligners, gently and gradually begin to move your teeth into the proper position without unsightly brackets and wires.

EASIER CLEANING

One of the biggest challenges of having braces is removing all the food that gets trapped in the brackets and wires. This can often lead to plaque buildup and eventually tooth decay. With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so it’s easy to continue brushing and flossing the way you normally do.

OVERALL HEALTH

Think of your teeth as a window to the health of your body. Your teeth and gums — and how they look to others when you smile—say a lot about your overall health. If you're taking good care of both, you're probably taking good care of the rest of you. Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss. Studies by the American Dental Association have shown that oral infections can also lead to other more serious ailments such as heart disease, stroke, pneumonia and diabetes5. Invisalign aligners make daily oral hygiene easier, thus reducing the risk of possible problems. And correctly aligned teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems, and increased wear on the tooth enamel. Invisalign effectively addresses all of these orthodontic issues, so you'll have the confidence of a great smile and increase the likelihood of improved oral health.

HEALTHY BODY AND TEETH - Nutrition Information

Parm SAYS!
Healthy Body, Dentists Brampton, Family, Dentist, Brampton, Best Dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Offices,
A healthy diet and nutritional counselling is becoming an increasingly important aspect of preventive dentistry and the general health.  It is very important to understand the quality, consistency, nutritional composition, and combinations in which foods are eaten for healthier teeth and body.

The new generation is clearly gearing towards a healthier diet to achieve a healthy physique and to maintain optimal levels of body's performance. A diet consisting of antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and some alternate foods such as soy foods, can help strengthen immunity and improve the body’s ability to combat bacteria. In other words, inflammation in the body can be avoided with more force when proper nutrients are absorbed through a complete diet. This can also help protect the teeth and gums. A healthy diet can also aid in the prevention of cavity-causing bacteria attacks. To make sure that your body obtains all the necessary nutrients and vitamins, it is best to follow Canada's Food Guide.

Healthy Body, Dentists Brampton, Family, Dentist, Brampton, Best Dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Offices,Calcium is an important component of a healthy diet and a mineral necessary for life.  It helps promote healthy strength of the bone and teeth.  Calcium-fortified drinks such as juices, milk and other dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D. Hard cheeses are also very good for the teeth as they help release a burst of calcium that mixes with plaque and sticks to the teeth, protecting them from the acid that causes decay.

Healthy Body, Dentists Brampton, Family, Dentist, Brampton, Best Dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Offices,Crisp fruits and raw vegetables, like apples, carrots and celery, help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath. Antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin C, and other nutrients from fruits and vegetables help protect gums and other tissues from cell damage and bacterial infection. Folic acid is also important to have in a healthy diet. It helps promote a healthy mouth and supports cell growth throughout the entire body. Folic acid can be found mainly in dark green leafy vegetables. It is also very important to avoid or limit the foods that cause and promote cavities in the mouth.  Some of the cavity-causing organisms in the mouth feed on the sugar in foods such as soda, sugary drinks/candies and convert it to acid, which attacks tooth enamel and causes tooth decay.

An acidic environment in the mouth can also cause problems with the teeth. Acidic foods and drinks such as carbonated drinks, citrus fruit juices, wine, pickles and honey can cause tooth enamel to weaken, wear away and teeth to become sensitive, cracked and discolored. Foods that take a long time to chew or that you hold in your mouth (such as cough drops) can damage teeth as they hold sugar against teeth longer than other foods do. Be sure to avoid snacking on sugary, carbohydrate-rich or acidic foods throughout the day, these foods should be consumed during meal times in order to decrease the amount exposed to time the teeth. The mouth produces more saliva to help digest larger meals, which then washes away more food and helps neutralize harmful acids before they can attack the teeth.

Healthy Body, Dentists Brampton, Family, Dentist, Brampton, Best Dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Offices,
A healthier diet aids in achieving a healthy physique and maintaining optimal levels of body's performance which is an important part of life. A diet that promotes good oral health is not just about the foods you eat or avoid, when and how you eat them is equally important.
