THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR DENTAL EXAM

You dental exam consists of the dentist looking in your mouth and examining things that can affect your oral and overall health. Although you may feel there is nothing wrong many things happening in your mouth you can not see or feel in the early stages whereas your dentist is highly trained to detect. The things that your dentist is looking for and checking are as follows:

* going over your overall general medical history to determine how it affects your oral health
* checking for plaque and tartar and the appropriate dental cleaning needed
* the overall condition of your teeth and mouth
* checking for cracked, damaged or decayed teeth
* examining the state of your gums, checking for gum disease, including gum measurements,
* assessing previous dental work
* suspicious growths in and around your mouth and tongue
* signs of any oral cancers
* whether you clench or grind your teeth which can cause cracks and wear your teeth down.
* examination of your tongue, roof and floor of your mouth
* TMJ - checking the jaw joints
* checking the condition of the bones in your face, jaw and mouth
* taking of dental x-rays which helps the dentist see between the teeth, check root canals of the teeth, infections and assess previous dental work
* an examination of your neck area, glands and lymph nodes
* checking your blood pressure

Early detection and prevention is our goal. The dentist goes through the findings and suggests the appropriate treatment, appointments and or referrals necessary. Be sure to ask lots of questions so that you can understand your oral health and be a part of making it better.

Aside from brushing, here are 5 more ways to improve your smile and your overall dental health:

1 - Make better food choices: Be wary of foods and drinks containing high levels of sugar or citric acid as well as highly staining beverages.

2 - Floss: Approximately 80% of the population does not floss regularly. By not flossing you are potentially missing out on cleaning up to 60% of you mouth.

3 - See your Dental Team Regularly: Regular dental checks and cleanings are a great way to ensure that there are no developing oral health issues that could lead to unsightly problems if left untreated.

4 - Teeth Whitening: Unfortunately over time our teeth lose their white appearance and become stained. Whitening can restore youth to your face and smile.

5 - Orthodontics: if  you are unhappy with your smile maybe it's time to change it permanently

YOUR BABY'S TEETH - Starting Early Starts Good Habits

Michelle SAYS!

brampton dental office, brampton dentist, brampton family dentist, dental information, dentist brampton, dentist in brampton, baby's first dental visit,Brushing should be started as soon as your baby gets their first tooth. Starting early gets your baby used to the daily routine and brushing at least twice daily. Introducing good dental routines at an early age will set your child set up for life.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
1 - Be Sure to use a small, child sized toothbrush with soft bristles.
2 - Do not use fluoridated toothpaste on children under the age of 2 years or until your child knows how to spit well and will not swallow it. This is because if young children swallow toothpaste enriched with fluoride it could lead to tooth discolouration in the permanent teeth.
3 - Spend 2 minutes brushing your child's teeth, making sure to reach all areas of the mouth. Two minute timers are available at our office, drop by and ask for one.
4 - Replace the toothbrush every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if the bristles show signs of wear.
5 - Never share you child's toothbrush with others.
6 - Start flossing your child's teeth daily as soon as 2 teeth touch or the child lets u lol.
7- Be sure to bring your child along to the dentist from an early age to get them used to it.

When Should your Child First See a Dentist?

Kam SAYS!

Brampton Dental Office, Brampton Dentist, Brampton Family Dentist, Dental Information, Dentist Brampton, Dentist in Brampton, Mouth Wash,
Your child's first visit to the dentist should happen before his or her first birthday. The general rule is six months after eruption of the first tooth. Taking your child to the dentist at a young age is the best way to prevent problems such as tooth decay and it also helps parents learn how to clean their child's teeth. Decay can occur as soon as teeth appear. Bringing your child to the dentist early often leads to a lifetime of good oral care habits and stress free visits to dentist. Call us today.... to have your child assessed.

THE BENEFITS OF USING A MOUTHWASH AFTER BRUSHING AND FLOSSING

Joanna SAYS!

Brampton Dentist, Dentist in Brampton, Brampton Family Dentist, Brampton Dental Office, Mouth Wash, Dental Information,
Mouthwash provides a good contribution to our daily oral health care. It is best if used after a full routine of brushing and flossing, because if mouthwash is diluted with water it loses its effectiveness. It has the most benefits when rinsing for a full 30 seconds or more, and be sure to use a timer, "it’s longer than we think."

All mouthwashes will help with reducing the amount of plaque and bacteria in those areas of the mouth which are difficult to brush and floss. However, certain rinses provide extra advantages and protection. For example, a mouthwash with fluoride will help with reducing the occurrence of cavities and some mouthwashes aid with reducing dry-mouth. Non-alcohol based mouthwashes will reduce the stinging sensation for individuals with sensitive teeth and some are prescribed by the dentist to aid with helping gingival and periodontal issues. There are also dyed mouthwashes which will highlight remaining plaque and bacteria that have been missed after brushing. This is a great aid to help kids with their brushing if they are old enough to properly swish with mouthwash.

Make sure to ask at your next dental visit if a mouthwash would benefit with your oral health and which kind would work best for you!
