Single Tooth Implant done by Dr. Braganza and Dr. Dimovski - Creating Unforgettable Smiles

One of the best way to replace a missing tooth is by placing an implant. A dental implant is made mostly of titanium metal and it acts as an artificial root.  It is placed in the jaw bone and an artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. Especially in the aesthetic area (front teeth), placing an implant is usually the treatment of choice. Most front teeth are lost due to severe fractures, trauma, avulsed teeth in accidents or large cavities.

The implant (part in the bone), in the photo, was placed by our periodontist (dental specialist) and the crown (tooth part that is visible) by our dentist. The patient is very pleased with the outcome.

Implants can replace any missing teeth provided there is enough healthy bone and soft tissue to support the tooth. For more information The Canadian Dental Association has a site that explains the procedure and answers any questions you might have.

YOUR DENTAL CLEANING

Michelle SAYS!
Dental Cleaning, Dental Scaling, Tooth Polishing, Fluoride, Dentist Brampton, Family Dentist in Brampton, Brampton Dental Office,Teeth Cleanings\Scaling

Dental cleaning\scaling is when the dental hygienist or dentist uses specialized instruments (hand and /or ultrasonic) to remove plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria infested film) and tartar\calculus (grey, yellow, brown, black) hard deposits from your teeth without harming them. A few minutes after brushing a thin layer of saliva, proteins, and bacteria (called pellicle) is formed on the teeth which acts as a base for bacterial attachment and growth. Eventually with the accumulation of various species of bacteria and sugars from the foods we eat we get a white\yellowish substance called plaque along our gums and teeth. If the plaque is not removed it will attract minerals from the saliva and harden turning into calculus/tartar. If calculus/tartar is left on the teeth it will provide a situation for bacteria to thrive next to the gums which is detrimental for the health of the gums and can lead to gum disease(gingivitis) which leads to periodontal disease which leads to tooth loss. The purpose of the cleaning is to leave the teeth clean and smooth so bacteria is unable to stick to them, reverse gum disease and prevent the progression to periodontal disease.

Polishing/Prophy

Polishing is done after scaling to remove any left over plaque from the teeth and gums and to remove extrinsic stain. It is done using a slow speed hand piece with a soft rubber cup at the end and a special gritty toothpaste-like material.

Fluoride

Fluoride helps to strengthen the teeth from the acids from bacteria in dental tartar and plaque that can weakened them, it also possesses anti-bacterial qualities.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR DENTAL EXAM

You dental exam consists of the dentist looking in your mouth and examining things that can affect your oral and overall health. Although you may feel there is nothing wrong many things happening in your mouth you can not see or feel in the early stages whereas your dentist is highly trained to detect. The things that your dentist is looking for and checking are as follows:

* going over your overall general medical history to determine how it affects your oral health
* checking for plaque and tartar and the appropriate dental cleaning needed
* the overall condition of your teeth and mouth
* checking for cracked, damaged or decayed teeth
* examining the state of your gums, checking for gum disease, including gum measurements,
* assessing previous dental work
* suspicious growths in and around your mouth and tongue
* signs of any oral cancers
* whether you clench or grind your teeth which can cause cracks and wear your teeth down.
* examination of your tongue, roof and floor of your mouth
* TMJ - checking the jaw joints
* checking the condition of the bones in your face, jaw and mouth
* taking of dental x-rays which helps the dentist see between the teeth, check root canals of the teeth, infections and assess previous dental work
* an examination of your neck area, glands and lymph nodes
* checking your blood pressure

Early detection and prevention is our goal. The dentist goes through the findings and suggests the appropriate treatment, appointments and or referrals necessary. Be sure to ask lots of questions so that you can understand your oral health and be a part of making it better.

PROPER DENTURE CARE

Joanna SAYS!

Denture Care, Dentist Brampton, Brampton Dental Office, Seniors Dental care,
It is very important to take proper care of removable dentures, as it relates to the health of the whole mouth. If dentures aren’t cleaned properly or don’t fit the way they used to, it can lead to sores and irritations on the mouth and gums.

Proper Care is as follows:

Careful not to drop them; it can lead to chipping, breaking or bending of the metal components.
Brush and rinse them daily; a soft bristled brush should be used to prevent scratching of the components. Denture brushes are a good purchase to make to aid in the care of your denture. Rinsing with water after each meal is beneficial as well.
Use of denture cleansers; many toothpastes are too abrasive for dentures and milder solutions should be used specified for denture cleaning to prevent damage to the surfaces of the denture.
Removal of dentures; dentures should be removed every night and kept in a liquid soaking solution or water to prevent drying out or losing their shape.
Look after your whole mouth; even if they are complete dentures it is still important to take care for your gums. After denture removal, rinse out very well and massage your gums with a wet face cloth or a soft bristled toothbrush gently.
Maintain routine dental checks; it is also important to bring your dentures to each dental visit, so the dentist or dental hygienist can assess the denture’s fit and look and check for any sore areas where the denture may be sitting incorrectly.

If you have any questions regarding proper care for your dentures or about any denture cleansing products be sure to ask your dental professional at your next dental visit.

THUMB SUCKING AND HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD STOP THE HABIT

Kam SAY!

Brampton Dentist, Dentist in Brampton, Thumb Sucking, Speech Problems, Brampton Family Dentist,
Thumb Sucking is healthy and normal when children are infants. Most children stop somewhere between the age of two and four. The effects of thumb sucking are usually reversible up until the age of seven, because children still have their deciduous (baby) teeth. If thumb sucking continues beyond the age of seven, when the second teeth are coming through, permanent dental problems can occur.

Problems caused by Thumb Sucking:

Excessive thumb sucking may lead to buck teeth (the front teeth may be pushed out of alignment). This can alter the shape of the face and lead to an open bite. It can also cause a child to have a lisp. Pre-school children who suck their thumbs can push their teeth out of their normal position, which in turn, interferes with the correct formation of certain speech sounds.

Helping children stop thumb sucking:

There are various things you can do to help your child stop thumb sucking. Focusing on the positives and rewarding your child are very important. Depending on your child's age and ability, you might like to try rewarding your child and offer encouragement with a hug or praise to reinforce their decision to stop the habit. It is also very important to limit nagging. If children feel they are being nagged they will become defensive. Mark their progress on a calendar by placing a star or a tick for each period (such as a day or week) that the child does not suck their thumb. Provide a special outing or a toy if the child gets through the period successfully. Encourage bonding, with a special toy. You may also give your child a mitten to wear as a reminder not to suck their thumb or place unpleasant tasting nail paint (available from chemists) on the thumb. Placing a Band-Aid over the thumb at bedtime is another reminder. Offer distractions while your child is watching TV and have toys available for your child to play with to keep them distracted. Sit with the your child during this time and give a cuddle. In the car, have toys available to keep them occupied.

For more information contact our dental specialist to help your child kick the habit.
