Stress, Teeth Grinding and Headaches

Teeth grinding can be caused not just by stress and anxiety but by sleep disorders, an abnormal bite or teeth that are missing or crooked. The symptoms of teeth grinding include:

- dull headaches

- jaw soreness

- teeth that are painful or loose

- fractured teeth

Your dentist can fit you with a night guard to protect your teeth during sleep. In some cases, your dentist or physician may recommend taking a muscle relaxant before bedtime. If stress is the cause you need to find a way to relax. Meditation, counselling and exercise can all help reduce stress and anxiety.

Teeth grinding is also common in children. However, because their teeth and jaws change and grow so quickly it is not usually a damaging habit that requires treatment and most outgrow it by adolescence.

Although in adults teeth grinding is often the result of stress, the same is not always true with children. Other possible causes of teeth grinding in children include:

- irritation in the mouth

- allergies

- misaligned teeth

If you’re concerned about your child’s teeth grinding, ask your child’s dentist about the potential causes and, if necessary, the possible solutions. (ADA)

NIGHT GUARDS AND WHY YOU SHOULD WEAR ONE!

Melissa G. SAYS!

Brampton Dentist, Brampton family Dentist, Family DEntistry Brampton, Night guard,
Do you wake up with headaches, neck or jaw pain? If you do, you might be clenching or grinding while you sleep and it is often the case that people do not even realize they are doing it. The cause is unknown, but it's assumed that stress and anxiety are major factors.

If you do find yourself waking up with headaches, neck or jaw pain you might be in need of a night guard. A night guard is an appliance that can help with bruxism, another named used for grinding.  Shaped like a horse-shoe, a night guard is similar to a retainer, although made out of thermal plastic material. It is designed to protect your upper and lower teeth from grinding and clenching against each other.

DO YOU WAKE UP WITH HEADACHES, EARACHES OR TOOTH PAIN?

Melissa O. SAYS!

Do you wake up often with headaches, earaches or tooth pain? If YES, you might be clenching or grinding your teeth at night while sleeping.

Clenching and grinding your teeth at night can cause pain. You can wake up with headaches, earaches and/or toothaches. The muscles of the jaw may also feel sore and tender and you may be wearing down your teeth, loosening fillings, chipping or fracturing your teeth. Wearing away the enamel of the teeth can cause them to become more sensitive to temperature. If you are experiencing any of these conditions be sure to let us know at your next dental visit as you may need to wear a Night Guard while sleeping.

A Night Guard is made of a soft plastic that fits over your teeth and is worn at night while you sleep. So instead of wearing away at your teeth you wear away the Night Guard. It is made at a certain thickness to put less stress on the jaw joint and muscles.

For more information be sure to contact our office to find out if a Night Guard is the right treatment for you.
